En el mundo hay campeonatos, hay juegos y hay seminfales y finales, pero solamente existe un Mundial de Tango y, por mucha suerte, empezó durante mi ultima semana en el umbligo de tango: Buenos Aires.
In the world there are championships, games, semi-finals and finals, but there is only one World Tango Championship and, luckily, it started during my last week in the tango epicenter: Buenos Aires.

Porque soy bien tanguera, y porque me gusta serlo, convencí a los chicos de que tengamos una pequeña clase y milonga en casa antes de que me vayas para los Estados Unidos y por suerte arrancamos justo antes de las ceremonias de apertura del Mundial. De todos modos, nos divertimos y nos pasamos muy bien a pesar del frío y una falta de varones.
Since I'm a "tanguera" at heart, and because I like it that way, I convinced my housemates to have a little tango class and milonga at home this week before I leave to go back to the States. Luckily, our little event coincided perfectly with the beginning of the World Tango Championships. Lots of fun was had by all despite the cold and a startling shortage of men.

Hay milongas como "La Marshall" dónde el género de la pareja no importa y los hombres llevan hombres y las mujeres llevan mujeres, pero llevar a otro no es fácil. Gracias a la paciencia de Anabella unas de nosotras (chicas) aprendimos ser "varón" y llevar las "mujeres". Es una experiencia muy útil y necesaria para entender los pasitos, los sandwichitos y las figuras infinitas.
Sobre todo, hay que tener un perspetiva optimista y mucha, pero mucha, buena onda.
Milongas like "La Marshall" throw "gender rules" out the window and allow men to lead men and women to lead women, but being the leader isn't easy. Thanks to Anabella's infinite patience a few of us (girls) learned to be the "leader" and lead the "follower" to be politically correct. Learning what goes on with your partner is very useful in order to understand the steps, the sandwichitos and the infinite tango figures.
The bottom line is that you need to be very optimistic and give off good, but very good, vibes.

Aunque ninguno de nosotros va a competir en el Mundial (ni en pedo) no nos faltan oportunidades para disfrutar de ver y participar en el festival. El Mundial de Tango empieza el 14 de agosto y termina el 27 con entrada gratuita a todos los eventos, incluso a clases de técnica y tango escenario, conciertos y espectáculos de baile. Muchas milongas en la ciudad organizan eventos especiales también. En el Centro de Exposiciones se juntan artistas y artesanos para vender ropa, tacos y todos los accesorios imaginables de tango.
Although none of us will be competing in the World Championship, we were not wanting for opportunities to enjoy and participate in the festivities. The World Tango Championship began August 14th and ended the 27th. All the events were free, including technique classes and "show tango", concerts and demonstrations. Many milongas in the city organized special events for these few weeks and in the Exposition Hall artisans and craftsmen sold clothing, shoes and every imaginable tango accessory.
